METALLICA's First-Ever Concert In Peru Sets Attendance Record
January 21, 2010CBS News has posted a short video report on METALLICA's first-ever appearance in Peru, which took place this past Wednesday night (January 19) in Lima. Also available is more footage of METALLICA's Lima press conference, which was held a few hours before the show.
According to LivingInperu.com, METALLICA's concert in Lima grossed more than 11 million soles (U.S. $3.7 million dollars) and was the biggest rock event in Peruvian history, with around 55,000 people in attendance.
"Bringing METALLICA to Peru cost twice as much as other bands like OASIS and R.E.M., and that's why there was a slight increase in ticket prices," said Coqui Fernandez, the Peruvian businessman who organized the concert.
Peru's biggest concerts of 2009 were staged by JONAS BROTHERS (two shows with a combined attendance of 55,000) and OASIS, which drew 41,000 fans.
DEPECHE MODE and THE KILLERS performed at the Monumental Stadium Esplanade in front of 30,000 people.
METALLICA's show was the first of a South American tour that will bring the band to Panama, Costa Rica, Argentina, Chile, Brazil and several other countries.
Following that run, the quartet will head to Europe for dates throughout the spring and summer.
There's no word yet on whether METALLICA plans to play any North American shows in 2010.
